  • What is the optimum size of group?

The optimum size of group is between 10 and 12, with a maximum group size of 12. This is so that we can give all of the students as much focused attention as possible.

Up to 3 members of staff accompany the young people.

  • What is the optimum age range of the group?

The ideal year groups for the project are Years 7-10 but we have had success with students ranging from years 5 to 11 as well. We will consider any age range; it can be advantageous to bring students from a range of year and peer groups.

  • Which students should I bring?

We focus our attention on students who are at risk of social exclusion. Students may be having problems with their behaviour at school, they may be regular truants or they may suffer from low self esteem and struggle to maintain good relationships with their peers. During their time on the farm, we help students to analyse the root causes of these problems and to develop strategies for overcoming them in the future.

Although this is the area in which we feel we can have the greatest impact, we believe that students from all backgrounds can benefit from this experience and we are open to approaches from a wide variety of schools and youth organisations.

  • Is there any follow up to the trip?

The visit to Jamie's Farm acts as a catalyst for vulnerable youngsters to transform their lives. We will endeavour to visit a school within eight to twelve weeks of the trip to discuss progress with both staff members and students. If the student is slowly regressing into previous bad habits, we can discuss intervention strategies to re-engage that student. Students who have become a big success upon returning to school have the opportunity to return to the farm as a mentor on a subsequent trip. Ideally, all students who visit Jamie's Farm will become role models for other vulnerable youngsters.

  • What is the impact?

All visiting schools have reported success stories from their students, and many have found it to be a catalyst for long term positive change.

Staff bringing a group will be expected to provide information about participating young people in advance of the visit, and to follow up with our staff at 2 and 6 month intervals. This will help assess the impact of the visit on the individual student and is necessary for the young people, their schools and Jamie's Farm.

  • How many staff should I bring?

Up to 3 staff members, depending on the size of the group. The visit should be an enjoyable experience for staff although they will be expected to join in and help out with the activities as much as possible. Jamie’s Farm is not for teachers who want a holiday! On booking you will receive the staff pack which can be used for staff briefing in advance of the visit.

Many staff members have commented that the experience has not only been an uplifting one but has also developed their practice and improved the way they work with students. For more information about staff development at Jamie's Farm, click here.

  • What activities will the students be involved in?

  • Which staff should I bring?

Staff who are likely to be working closely with the students, since Jamie’s Farm aims to build positive relationships between young people and adults, who are witness to their successes on the farm. Appropriate choices may be heads of year, pastoral leaders, learning mentors etc.

  • I am thinking of bringing a trip, what should my next steps be?

Before committing to bringing a trip, we would like to arrange a face to face meeting with you. If you have a suitable group in mind, please get in contact and we will organise a time when we can come in and see you.
